DISASTER RELIEF FUND

WIN serves In some of the most remote and rugged places in the world, and many of the people we serve survive below the poverty line. Under such circumstances when disasters strike, people have little or ability to help themselves. Their simple and often fragile homes are built in flood plains or perched on the side of mountains. When the floods or torrential rains come, floods and landslides demolish sections of entire villages.  

Most recently, on the morning of August 26th a wall of water was released up in the mountains when a glacial dam burst. 

The tragic loss of life is staggering - it is believed that 12,000-14,000 people have perished.

Accomplished So Far

With WIN funds, our national coordinator Amar mobilized a team that rescued 185 people, especially those working in the hydropower tunnels. 

Because the flood destroyed the bridges, many survivors were stranded as they were hydropower workers from other parts of Nepal. We have reunited over 100 with their families by airlifting them to safety and providing accommodation, food, and travel home. We also are caring for families recovering loved ones who died.

Future & ongoing

We have purchased 50 large tents and will be providing food, cooking utensils, blankets, solar lighting, and other necessities to an estimated 500 survivors. This will enable the families who have lost their homes and all their belongings to survive the winter which is very cold in this region of Nepal, as it is high elevation. This will also enable them to have a secure and safe place to stay while they work toward rebuilding their lives.

• $250 can buy a large, strong tent to house 15 people, the tent has a 5 year warranty

This page is both for the Nepal disaster relief that is currently going on , and also for developing a Disaster Relief Fund. 

Gifts made here will enable us to provide further aid to Nepal now, and also rapid response - rescue of survivors and immediate and longer term aid -  in the event of future similar disasters.
